An Interview with DragonBob

How did you get started with puppet theater?

I attended an SCA (medieval reenactment group) event 25 years ago and noticed the abundance of activities for adults, but little or nothing for children. As per membership, I began a quest to create entertainment for children. Since puppet theatre was the TV of the Middle Ages, I worked to put a Medieval style show together. I made the puppets, theatre, and wrote stories for what became a much sought after activity. Events, parties, schools, churches, and libraries began seeking me out. Later the Medieval theme became a dragon theme and as I have always enjoyed stuffed dragons, especially the cute puppets, I put together a whole show that brings stories, history, games, and audience participation into a one hour performance for children of all ages (even the adult kids).

Tell us a little about your dragons.

All of my dragons were purchased over the years, but maintained by myself as I am the only human involved, other than the audience.

Do you work alone or with a group?

Right now it's just me and my children, two adorable black cats and the many kids that look forward to my attendance at events.

What was your favorite show you ever put on?

Funny you should ask about my favorite show. My favorite was my first Once Upon A Dragon Time show. I was scared stupid, but carried on despite stumbling over words and actions. Afterwards I was approached by a 4 year old, beautiful little girl that gave me a big hug as best she could. She looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said, "Thank you". Once I recovered from the shock, I realized I was on the right track. That I was doing something wonderful. I was inspired and for the past 14 years I have constantly made improvements to make the show even more entertaining.

Have you ever had a mishap or accident during a show?

There was the one Samhain show where I left half the equipment at home and had to 'wing' it. Thanks to some friends I managed to accomplish what I set out to do, but talk about scared (and on Halloween at that).

What are your other shows like?

The other shows I do feature pretty much the same format as "Dragon Time", but with different puppets. "Rhythm Time" uses a monkey and giraffe to tell stories, and the kids get to play drums as well as other percussion. "Tribal Time" has an owl to help and the kids play an actual Cherokee childrens game, beat the pow wow drum and perform a friendship dance with any adults that wish to join. "Mountain Time" has a very lifelike squirrel to help. The kids get to hear stories, learn about the toys Appalachian children created (there was no Toys r Us), and not only learn about mountain musical instruments, but get to actually play them.

Tell us a little bit more about your life outside your shows.

I graduated NC State University with a BA in performing arts/music. I am a concert cellist by trade, but lover of all life especially the innocent. I follow a Pagan path that borrows from many traditions. As Scott Cunningham once wrote, "Use what works for you".

Thank you very much, Dragonbob! We've been honored to have you contribute to our very first Pagan Spotlight column!
