The Three Little Butterflies

by Jera

The Magic Meadow is home to all sorts of creatures. There are especially numerous butterflies, because butterflies love flowers and the Magic Meadow is filled with many, many beautiful flowers. In the springtime, the whole Meadow comes alive with the multicolor blooms. It's a wonderful place for butterflies! This story is about three in particular. These three butterflies were sisters. One of them was red, one of them was yellow, and one of them was white! They played in the meadow all day, flying around in the warm sunshine, flitting from flower to flower, enjoying the warm breeze, and visiting the other bugs and butterflies. One afternoon, the three little butterflies were so engrossed in a game of butterfly-tag that they did not notice the meadow empty out! Rain clouds had gathered above the Magic Meadow and all the animals went to their homes to stay nice and dry. But the three little butterflies were too far away from home to go home in time before the rain started!

"I have an idea!" cried the red butterfly. "Let's go visit my friend the red tulip! She will let us take shelter under her petals until the rain stops!" The three butterfly sisters flew over to the red tulip. "Tulip, tulip, pretty tulip, give us shelter from the rain!" begged the little red butterfly. "I'll open up my blooms for you, little red butterfly, but I won't let your sisters in! Everyone knows that red is the best color, and I only associate with red creatures!" the tulip replied. The little red butterfly sadly shook her head. "Then I'm sorry, red tulip, but I won't abandon my sisters!" And so the three little butterflies flew away.

"I have an idea too!" cried the yellow butterfly. "Let's go visit my friend the yellow tulip! Maybe she will be nicer than the red tulip, and she will let us take shelter under her petals!" So the three butterfly sisters flew over to the yellow tulip. "Tulip, tulip, pretty tulip, give us shelter from the rain!" begged the little yellow butterfly. "I'll open up my blooms for you, little yellow butterfly, but I won't let your sisters in! Everyone knows that yellow is the best color, and I only associate with yellow creatures!" the tulip replied. The little yellow butterfly sadly shook her head. "Then I'm sorry, yellow tulip, but I won't abandon my sisters!" And so the three little butterflies flew away again.

"I also have an idea!" cried the white butterfly. "Let's go visit my friend the white tulip! She will definitely let us take shelter under her petals! She's the nicest flower I know!" The three butterfly sisters hopefully flew over to the white tulip. "Tulip, tulip, pretty tulip, give us shelter from the rain!" begged the little white butterfly. "I'll open up my blooms for you, little white butterfly, but I won't let your sisters in! Everyone knows that white is the best color, and I only associate with white creatures!" the tulip replied. The little white butterfly sadly shook her head. "Then I'm sorry, white tulip, but I won't abandon my sisters!" And so the three little butterflies flew away sadly.

By now, the three of them were soaked through from the rain, and they huddled together on the ground, shivering. They were so cold, wet, and miserable that they couldn't even fly! But as the wind passed the three little butterflies, he took pity on the shivering little creatures. He went up all the way to the sky and blew away the rain clouds. And the sun shone down on the little butterflies and warmed them up. By nightfall, they were completely dry! They flew home, had a nice dinner of flower pollen, and went straight to bed, exhausted from their adventures!
